SMART PLASTICS FORUM

Organised by the magazines Plast and Plast Design, SMART PLASTICS is a forum devoted to high-performance polymers. Taking place in a prestigious location, namely the Museo Storico Alfa Romeo in Arese (Milan), the 7th edition of SMART PLASTICS, will represent an “open” and “connected” event. In the heart of the museum’s exhibition area, the presentations will focus on the state of the art of engineering polymers and composites, their applications and design and processing technologies.

In addition, the 7th edition of SMART PLASTICS will include a new section:

Focus Additivi: a special section dedicated to additives and their applications geared to improving the performance of polymers and to developing highly specific compounds.

ABB: an application for a bio-based polymer

ABB, leading Company in the technologies for energy and automation, has developed a project for a series of switch cover frame, showing an advanced design and an evident environment sustainability connotation.
That’s why we decided to look for a bioplastic with particular properties that could replace the thermoplastics that are normally used for this application, such as ABS or PC ABS.

Halogen free solutions P and or N based for engineering thermoplastic polymers

Flame retardancy is one of the most important caractheristic plastic must have, when it has to be thought for replacing metals. Most of flame retardants package, are base on bromide/antimony trioxide combination, which it is more and more under concern form aromatic bromine and antimony healthy and enviromental problems, they are suspected giving. We would like giving a small guide for offering halogen formulations for engineering thermoplastic polymers. We will divide phoshorous base fame retardant molecules in 4 groups: Red P (P0), Phosphinates (P1), Phosphonates (P3), Phosphonates (P5) and we will describe which flame retardant mechanism, they are actionating. We will listen other halogen free flame retardants, not P base, and their fire mechanism: melamine cyanurate, melamine polyphosphate, pyrophosphate, zinc borate, metal hydroxide. We will then see how engineering thermolastic polymers burn and we will offer several halogen free packages for PA , PET, PBT, PC, PC/ABS, ABS, with plus and minus comparing with halogenated solutions.

I componenti strutturali realizzati mediante stampaggio a iniezione di termoplastici fibro-rinforzati presentano significative criticità di progettazione e stampaggio. Nel componente stampato le proprietà meccaniche possono essere di molto inferiori a quelle indicate nella scheda tecnica del materiale e dipendono largamente dall'orientazione delle fibre, dalla posizione dei difetti (ad es. linee di giunzione e porosità) e dalle condizioni di stampaggio. L'intervento presenterà le soluzioni tecniche più efficaci, sperimentate recentemente per massimizzare le performance meccaniche e ridurre il peso.

IamNature®: the first technopolymer that is also bio

The event will offer an overview of the state of the art of bioplastics.
The focus will be on the different “families” of materials that belong to this group, identifying the different types depending on their origin and their intended use as well as end of life.
We will explain the difference between BIO BASED, BIODEGRADABLE and COMPOSTABILITY in different environmental conditions.
We will introduce IamNature®, the first technopolymer. The basic polymer is a polyhydroxyalkanoates that can be used as it is or blended with other bio-based products such as PLA or with other biodegradable materials such as PBS, PBSA, PBAT, etc.
The innovative material developed by Maip Group has allowed the production, in co-operation with ABB, of a fully BIO switch cover frame.

In the near future, the industry will face issues of innovation based on new models of production and development that must combine country economic competitiveness to the new global cultural driver such as environmental protection, sustainable development, health, safety, etc.. An important revolution will come from advanced materials and nanotechnologies that will produce a radical innovation on materials. Today Plasma technology offers a valid alternative to conventional chemistry in the process of surface finishing of materials, with many benefits due to its high eco-sustainability. In fact, the plasma chemistry is a "dry" chemistry working without solvents and with minimal use of reagents, eliminating the problems associated with the solvents disposal, humans and environment safety. It becomes possible to finely tune the surface properties of the materials through the fine adjustment of the experimental parameters, resulting in a customized “surface tailoring” of materials, without affecting their bulk properties.

In the world of plastic interior and exterior components, the aesthetics of the parts gets more and more important, not just for the pure supply, but also during the life of the vehicle.
In the car market, the surface requirements are getting increasingly compelling and are necessary to guarantee an improved surface aesthetics. Lab tests (UV resistance, surface damaging tests and chemical agents resistance) are more and more demanding and imperative.

Replacing PA66 with PA6 in highly technical applications: which possibilities?

The low availability of PA66 polymer has led many users to search for alternatives materials that can meet the technical equirements of applications even of high technical content. Among these, the most considered material always belongs to the family of polyamides: it is the well-known PA6. The comparison between the properties of the two materials (PA66 vs. PA6) considering the intrinsic characteristics and the behavior in long lasting tests. Some high technical content applications, currently in PA66, will be taken into consideration, and the pros / cons of a possible replacement with PA6 will be discussed.

How to get there

The Alfa Romeo Museum is very close to the Expo 2015 area and can be reached by several routes:

  • from the Arese/Lainate exit from the A8/A9 Lainate-Como-Chiasso and Milan-Varese motorways to the lakes;
  • from the A4 Turin-Milan-Venice motorway;
  • from the western Milan ring road that continues southwards with the A1 Milan-Rome-Naples and A7 Milan-Genoa motorways.

By car

The Museum is close to the Lainate/Arese exit on highway A8. Alternatively, it can be reached from provincial road SP 233 Varesina and state road SS 33 del Sempione.

By public transport

The Museum is 15 km away from the city centre of Milan and can easily be reached by public transport. Take the train or metro line M1 until the station of Rho-Fiera, then take bus line 561 Airpullman, destination Arese, which stops right in front of the Museum (the bus service is active 7 days a week. Tickets can be bought at the station of Rho-Fiera or at the ticket machine)

There is also a shuttle bus linking the Milano Central Railway Station to Il Centro Arese (500m. far from the museum in only 30 minutes, daily. The shuttle bus leaves from Milano Central Railway Station: Piazza Duca d’Aosta ( MM2 MM3 Centrale FS ). Tickets are available online (5€ return ticket)
